3 Things that happen at every family session - and why you don't have to worry about them!

A LOT of people put off doing a family session because it can feel a bit overwhelming, bouncing around in the ‘too hard’ basket.

Will the kids behave? Will it even be worth it? What the hell do I even wear?

I’ve been in business 7 years now and I’ve met plenty of families over that time and I can tell you at LEAST 3 things that happen every time!

Children don’t sit there and smile like angels.

If I can give you any advice it would be - don’t be too hard on the kids if they turn into tiny crazy people at your session.

It doesn’t matter if they were excited beforehand and you thought they’d be amazing - when it comes to the actual time a whole bunch of factors collide and sometimes, it’s a little too much for them.

Al of a sudden there is a stranger taking photos of them, and they can feel mum and dad silently willing them to be good and sometimes? They lose it. And that’s okay, honestly.

Older kids, around 6 - 9 years old, can go the other way and seem to forget how to actually smile naturally. That’s because they are feeling a little insecure and they overcompensate by being silly and showing off.

Again, that’s okay.

Just trust me when I say I’ve seen it all and your family is perfectly normal and perfectly awesome. I will STILL get photos.

Someone will scratch their face, or bruise their eye or get a pimple the day before!

Always! Don’t stress about it - I can easily edit out scratches and bruises in a matter of seconds.

You’ll realise it’s not about perfection.

This is a good one.

Everyone wants a perfect session but there are no perfect families. Sometimes the family images aren’t what you imagined, but are better. They are more you. If the kids won’t sit and smile, then you’ll find magic in the images of them laughing as they splash in the ocean.

Or you’ll realise the wind is going to blow your daughter’s hair and that perfect bow you wanted in it is not going to happen. Instead, the images of her running towards you happily with messy hair flying around is exactly how she should be.

Dresses aren’t going to sit perfectly, shirts are going to move a little - these things don’t really matter. What you’re trying to capture is the feel of who you are as a family and that will come through with a little bit of patience and love.
